The Unseen Rescue

The roar of highway traffic drowned out the frantic cries of three tiny white kittens, trapped inside a tied plastic bag on the sunbaked shoulder of the road. They huddled together, struggling for air as oblivious pedestrians walked right past them. A man in a t-shirt and a couple strolling by completely missed the desperate fight for survival happening right at their feet.Then, a steady tap… tap… tap approached. An elderly man with a white cane was walking down the road. Though he couldn’t see the cruel plastic bag, his hearing caught what the sighted world had ignored: the faint, desperate mews of the kittens. Pausing his journey, he turned toward the sound, stepping carefully toward the edge of the road to rescue the fragile lives everyone else had left behind.
