A guardian’s instict

Drawn by the morning sunlight, little Leo crawled happily across the front lawn, entirely oblivious as he reached the curb just as a delivery van surged down the street. From the porch, Rusty the golden retriever leaped into motion with a sharp bark, sprinting down the yard and gently clamping onto Leo’s onesie to wrench him back onto the safe grass with only a split second to spare as the van sped past. Settling himself protectively over the startled toddler, Rusty held his post until Leo’s mother burst from the front door barefoot and frantic, falling to her knees to scoop the crying child into her arms while pulling the loyal dog into a tearful, trembling embrace of pure relief.
