Echoes on the Asphalt

The highway roared, indifferent to the clear plastic bag tied shut on the dusty shoulder. Inside, three tiny white kittens huddled together, their desperate cries swallowed by the rush of passing semi-trucks.Dozens of people walked past. Some looked away; others didn’t notice at all. To them, the kittens were just roadside litter. Then came Arthur. He moved slowly, guided by the steady *tap-tap-tap* of his white cane. He couldn’t see the cruel sight, but amidst the deafening traffic, he heard what everyone else had ignored—a faint, frantic mewing.Arthur paused. His cane brushed against the crinkly plastic. Kneeling, his weathered hands reached out, feeling the unmistakable warmth of tiny, shivering bodies inside. With gentle resolve, he untied the yellow knot, scooped the three kittens into his arms, and tucked them safely inside his jacket. The traffic continued to roar, but for three little lives, the world was finally safe.
