Nashville International Airport could soon receive a glittering new name: Dolly Parton International Airport.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced plans to honor the late country legend by placing her name on the airport where Tennessee welcomes visitors from around the world.

The proposal gained momentum after more than 150,000 people reportedly supported an online petition calling for the change.

But one major obstacle remains.

The Metro Nashville Airport Authority currently has a policy preventing airport properties from being named after someone who has been deceased for less than two years. Dolly died on August 25, 2026, meaning the existing rule could delay the tribute.

However, the authority is expected to discuss both the policy and the governor’s proposal at a meeting on September 17. Changing the rule could allow the renaming to happen much sooner.

Dolly’s representatives said they were touched by the extraordinary public support and were open to further discussions.

Supporters believe the airport would be a fitting tribute. Dolly moved to Nashville after graduating from high school and built one of country music’s greatest careers there. She also became one of Tennessee’s most recognizable cultural and philanthropic figures.

The final decision has not yet been made, and additional approvals may still be required.

But if the proposal succeeds, future travelers could soon be arriving at—and “departin’ from”—Dolly Parton International Airport.
